Sipidipi’s Pop-Up Books: Turning Cities into Paper Architecture

Watching entire cities scale down into 3D paper models through Sipidipi’s pop-up books is pure magic!

Sipidipi’s pop-up books transform entire cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and San Francisco into legit paper architecture, unfolding into lively 3D pages.

Take a look at the Barcelona spread to see what makes this project so brilliant. The Sagrada Familia pops up like a golden miniature model, where every spire and buttress is cut from flat paper and layered to build authentic depth. Meanwhile, the background keeps things super clean and minimal with fine gray gridlines for streets, flat color blocks for parks, and a bold red bilingual sign. Zero drop shadows or gradients are used to fake depth—every bit of dimension comes purely from the folded paper layers themselves. Plus, tiny human figures printed right at the base of the tower highlight the impressive scale of the architecture.

The typography treatment is super clever too, feeling just like real-world city signage. Right in the center of each spread sits a bold red plaque featuring all-caps, condensed lettering—like SAGRADA FAMILIA or PALACIO DE CIBELES. Flanking both sides are neat little diamond badges showcasing the series title in English alongside Spanish or Catalan. Using a sturdy grotesque typeface with wide tracking makes everything super legible even from afar when displayed open on a shelf. Small dedication lines tucked neatly at the footer add a warm, subtle touch that balances out the grandeur of the pop-up structures above.

Production details were crafted with serious intention. Wrapped in smooth red cloth, heavy stock pages easily support complex folds. When opened, each spread stands firmly like its own diorama rather than a simple book page. The Costa Rica series takes it a step further with a 360-degree carousel format, recreating vibrant natural habitats featuring 27 bird species—bilingual, yet lightweight enough for easy travel. There is also an educational series focused on children’s rights, featuring circular die-cut windows showing kids holding hands.

Sipidipi is taking this project to PRINT 2026, part of Design Week Mexico opening on October 7.
