Inside the Craft of Lumberfly’s “Super Equipped” Animated Spot

Lumberfly recently directed “Super Equipped” for Equip Super—a super fun 3D animated TVC telling the story of a clumsy chicken getting a helping hand from a meticulous octopus buddy.

Nailing the right design style for the characters took quite some time since they are the heart and soul of the whole commercial. The big challenge was making the look fun and eye-catching without feeling too childish for a retirement fund TVC. Plus, leaning too hard into hyperrealism could easily make an octopus look slimy and a bit off-putting.

So, the production team experimented with a stylized, semi-realistic approach using 2D concepting, hand sculpting, and even the texture of a grapefruit skin for the octopus’s skin! Unlike most standard characters, bringing this one to life required a ton of patience and trust in the pipeline. It wasn’t until the character was rigged and posed that its true personality really shined through.

From meticulous hand animation and complex rigging to detailed simulations, this project threw plenty of tough yet exciting puzzles at the expert team. Thanks to strong creative concepts from the client and agency, along with total excitement and trust in the production crew, the entire workflow ran beautifully smooth from start to finish.

Lumberfly vừa đảm nhận vai trò đạo diễn cho “Super Equipped” của Equip Super – một sản phẩm TVC hoạt hình 3D đầy thú vị với câu chuyện kể về một chú gà hậu đậu được anh bạn bạch tuộc siêu kỹ tính giúp đỡ.

Việc tìm ra phong cách thiết kế phù hợp cho các nhân vật tiêu tốn khá nhiều thời gian vì họ chính là linh hồn của toàn bộ clip quảng cáo. Thử thách đặt ra là làm sao để tạo hình vừa vui nhộn, bắt mắt nhưng lại không bị cảm giác quá trẻ con đối với một sản phẩm TVC về quỹ hưu trí. Hơn nữa, nếu đi quá sâu vào phong cách tả thực (hyperrealism), nhân vật bạch tuộc rất dễ trông bị nhớt và gây cảm giác khó chịu.

Do đó, đội ngũ sản xuất đã thử nghiệm hướng tiếp cận bán thực tế (semi-realistic) được cách điệu hóa thông qua phác thảo 2D (2D concepting), điêu khắc thủ công (hand sculpting), và thậm chí là dùng cả cấu trúc bề mặt quả bưởi để làm chất liệu da cho chú bạch tuộc. Khác với hầu hết các nhân vật thông thường, quá trình hoàn thiện nhân vật này đòi hỏi sự kiên nhẫn và tin tưởng rất lớn vào quy trình làm việc, bởi chỉ khi được gắn xương (rigged) và tạo dáng (posed) thì nét tính cách thực sự của chú bạch tuộc mới lộ diện rõ nét.

Từ những phân đoạn diễn hoạt thủ công tỉ mỉ (hand animation), hệ thống xương phức tạp (rigging) cho đến phần mô phỏng kỹ xảo (simulation), dự án này mang đến rất nhiều bài toán hóc búa nhưng đầy kích thích cho cả đội ngũ chuyên gia. Nhờ ý tưởng sáng tạo mạnh mẽ từ phía khách hàng và agency, cùng sự hào hứng và tin tưởng tuyệt đối dành cho production team, quá trình triển khai công việc đã diễn ra vô cùng suôn sẻ và trọn vẹn.
