DUCKS: How a Casual Joke on a Walk Turned into an Animated Short by AJ Jefferies A serene lake, a few breadcrumbs, and a couple of ducks—the animated short DUCKS opens on a picture-perfect day at the park, right before those little birds turn all that peace and quiet on its head.
The spark for this project came completely out of nowhere during a family stroll. Watching three ducks dunk their heads underwater, AJ Jefferies started making up hilarious scenarios about what they’d do when they popped back up—just to get a good laugh out of the kids. Those off-the-cuff jokes slowly blossomed into a full-fledged script.
In an interview with Animation Mentor, Jefferies mentioned finishing the entire written script before jumping into storyboarding. Laying out the ideas in words first gave plenty of breathing room to tweak the visuals down the line. Crafted in between commercial gigs, this film was an impressive solo effort—handling writing, directing, character design, and animation—with Megalithic Sound teaming up to deliver the sound design and music.
