CDA Independence: A Custom Variable Typeface Inspired by the Independence Palace

CDA Independence: A Variable Typeface Inspired by the Independence Palace’s Stone Lattice CDA Independence is a versatile variable typeface created by Cōllective Design Agency (CDA) in collaboration with the Independence Palace. The project transforms iconic concrete stone lattice motifs into a fresh, modern visual language.

Inspired by Architectural Rhythm The creative spark behind the font comes from the brise-soleil (stone lattice screens) surrounding the second floor of the Independence Palace—an architectural landmark designed by Ngô Viết Thụ. The CDA design team translated those architectural elements into typography through rhythmic repetition, layering, contrast, and subtle elegance.

Design Details & Vietnamese Diacritics Each character in CDA Independence carries structural cues from the stone lattice pattern. The contrast, serifs, and terminals are carefully calibrated for punchy clarity and smooth flow. Right from the start, Vietnamese diacritics were built as a foundational part of the type design, optimizing spacing for everything from large display headers to short body copy.

2-Axis Variable Design Crafted as a variable font, it offers two custom axes: Weight and Serif. This setup lets the typeface shift seamlessly across different contexts—from clean, highly readable text to bold, expressive headlines.

Integrated Iconography As part of the broader visual identity research for the Independence Palace, a matching wayfinding icon system was developed alongside the font. The icons share the same stroke proportions and architectural shapes, blending signage and typography into one cohesive design system.

CDA Independence: Bộ font chữ biến thể lấy cảm hứng từ rèm hoa đá Dinh Độc Lập

CDA Independence là bộ font chữ biến thể (variable typeface) do Cōllective Design Agency (CDA) thực hiện qua sự hợp tác cùng Dinh Độc Lập. Dự án mang những đường nét kiến trúc bê tông đá quen thuộc chuyển hóa thành một ngôn ngữ thị giác hiện đại.

Cảm hứng từ nhịp điệu kiến trúc

Điểm tựa sáng tạo của bộ font bắt nguồn từ hệ thống “rèm hoa đá” (brise-soleil) bao quanh khu vực tầng hai của Dinh Độc Lập — công trình mang dấu ấn của kiến trúc sư Ngô Viết Thụ. Nhóm thiết kế tại CDA đã dịch chuyển ngôn ngữ kiến trúc ấy sang typography thông qua nhịp điệu, sự xếp lớp, độ tương phản và nét tiết chế chừng mực.

Chi tiết thiết kế và dấu tiếng Việt

Mỗi ký tự (glyph) trong CDA Independence đều mang cấu trúc thiết kế kế thừa từ mảng rèm hoa đá. Độ tương phản, chân chữ và nét kết thúc (terminals) được tinh chỉnh để tạo độ nét và nhịp điệu rõ ràng. Ngay từ giai đoạn đầu, hệ thống dấu tiếng Việt (diacritics) đã được tính toán như một phần cốt lõi của bộ chữ, giúp tối ưu không gian hiển thị cho cả tiêu đề lớn lẫn các đoạn văn bản ngắn.

Khả năng biến đổi trên 2 trục (2-Axis Variable)

Bộ chữ được xây dựng dưới dạng variable font với 2 trục tùy chỉnh: Weight (độ dày) và Serif (chân chữ). Cấu trúc này giúp bộ font chuyển đổi linh hoạt giữa các ngữ cảnh sử dụng: từ các đoạn văn bản yêu cầu tính đọc rõ (readability) đến những tiêu đề hiển thị cần sự nổi bật.

Hệ thống biểu tượng đi kèm (Iconography)

Nằm trong dự án nghiên cứu và phát triển nhận diện thị giác cho Dinh Độc Lập, một hệ thống icon chỉ dẫn (wayfinding) cũng được thiết kế đồng bộ với bộ font. Các biểu tượng sử dụng chung tỷ lệ nét đậm – mảnh và hình khối kiến trúc, giúp phần biển hiệu chỉ dẫn và chữ viết hòa quyện thành một ngôn ngữ thống nhất.
