Stereoscope Coffee Packaging by OlssønBarbieri: Sculptural Design Meets Eastern Philosophy Oslo-based design studio OlssønBarbieri recently created a brand identity and sculptural packaging system for Stereoscope, a specialty coffee roaster based in Los Angeles. Founded by Leif An, Stereoscope doesn’t view Arabica coffee as just another commercial commodity—instead, it treats coffee as a living organism filled with rich ecological and historical depth.
Drawing inspiration from the stereoscope viewing tool and guided by the motto “In pursuit of depth and simplicity,” this design blends Yin-Yang philosophy and the five elements into a visual structure. Ditching traditional soft bags, OlssønBarbieri crafted sharp, geometric structures using FSC-certified paperboard that mimic the high-altitude mountain terrains where Arabica coffee thrives. The packaging collection comes in four seasonal colorways, finished with sleek hot-foil accents.
Here are a few standout design details from this project:
- Unboxing Experience: The box features an intuitive tear-off strip, turning the unboxing process into a deliberate, mindful first step of the coffee-brewing ritual.
- Interactive Label Architecture: The front of the box features trigram-shaped die-cuts inspired by Bagua. These cutouts reveal the inner info card, spotlighting specs like origin, farm relationships, and fermentation methods.
- Dynamic Typography: Built around a grotesque sans-serif font featuring five distinct character widths, the layout arranges letters in unpredictable sequences. This playful randomness echoes the rhythm of the five coffee flower petals as well as the five natural elements.
- Eco-Friendly Inner Bag: Inside, the beans rest in a 99.6% plant-based, biodegradable bag. The text on the pouch is written in the first person, letting the coffee beans tell their own growth story.
- Smart Shipping Optimization: Subscription orders keep the signature mountain shape for single boxes, while dual-pack boxes switch to a sleek skewed prism shape to slide perfectly into shipping boxes without wasting an inch of space.
