Marçal Prats’ Geometric Art Direction for Two Parisian Hotels Located in Paris’s lively 10th arrondissement, Crowne Plaza Paris République and Le Grand Quartier teamed up with graphic designer and creative director Marçal Prats to craft a custom visual art collection tailored for their lobbies, lounges, and guest rooms. Curated by art consultancy Double Decker and captured through the architectural lens of photographer Anna Stathaki, this project swaps mass-produced wall decor for a distinct visual narrative bridging graphic design, fine art printmaking, and interior architecture.
The core inspiration for the series draws from the abstract modern art collections housed at the nearby Centre Pompidou. Rather than simple references, Marçal Prats reimagined iconic 20th-century art movements using a crisp, contemporary vector language.
Victor Vasarely’s Op-art style comes alive through distorted checkerboards, isometric angles, and captivating optical illusions that bring dynamic movement into the space. Meanwhile, the Neoplasticism (De Stijl) vibes of Piet Mondrian shine through a clean grid of perpendicular black lines, framing vibrant pops of cadmium red, cobalt blue, and ochre yellow against soft off-white backdrops.
The collection also incorporates fluid curves and balanced forms inspired by Wassily Kandinsky, alongside rhythmic mechanical shapes drawn from Jean Tinguely’s kinetic sculptures. Every composition hinges on precise mathematical proportions, striking a sweet spot between negative space and bold geometric forms. Large shapes make an immediate visual statement from across the room, while intricate line work reveals engaging depth up close.
Framed in natural white oak or sleek black-coated steel, the artwork hangs beautifully above wooden wall paneling, rich emerald velvet sofas, stone reception desks, and warm brass accents. Natural sunlight paired with warm sconce lighting highlights the tactile paper texture and crisp screenprinted ink, seamlessly blending modern abstract art into the hotel interiors.
