Claustro – Packing Everyday Life into Tight Spaces with Mathieu BUREAU

Mathieu BUREAU’s Claustrophobia project (Claustro for short) delivers a delightfully naive animated world where characters go about their everyday routines—except they are squished into ridiculously tight spaces.

It all started as a fun style exercise: cramming characters and details into a square frame as tightly as possible to fully capture that delightfully cramped, claustrophobic feeling.

After completing 9 illustrations, the artist pushed the experiment even further by bringing each drawing to life through animation. These scenes were then stitched together and paired with custom sound effects to create a neat 30-second short video.

Claustro – Nhốt thế giới thường nhật vào không gian chật hẹp cùng Mathieu BUREAU

Dự án Claustrophobia (gọi tắt là Claustro) của Mathieu BUREAU mang đến một thế giới hoạ hình theo phong cách ngây thơ, nơi các nhân vật thực hiện những hoạt động quen thuộc hằng ngày nhưng lại bị thu nhỏ trong các không gian vô cùng chật hẹp. 

Ý tưởng bắt đầu từ một bài thực hành về phong cách: sắp xếp nhân vật cùng các chi tiết vào khung hình vuông sao cho dồn nén nhất có thể, nhằm truyền tải trọn vẹn sự gò bó và chật chội.

Sau khi thực hiện xong 9 bức minh họa (illustration), tác giả tiếp tục mở rộng thử nghiệm bằng cách làm chuyển động (animate) cho từng bức vẽ. Những phân cảnh này sau đó được ghép lại với nhau và kết hợp thêm hiệu ứng âm thanh (SFX) để tạo thành một đoạn video ngắn khoảng 30 giây.
