When building a brand identity and editorial design system for his studio, Mexico-based agency SAVVY STUDIO created a design framework that beautifully mirrors this artistic ethos—a place where language, gesture, and historical memory intersect. Ditching standard exhibition layout templates, the design team crafted a flexible system blending functional order with poetic touches. That minimalist black-and-white color palette strips away any unnecessary decoration, placing total focus on typography arrangements, rich ink density, and the dramatic weight of negative space.
Punch Card Grids and Fluxus Inspiration The foundational layout structure takes inspiration from Toshi Ichiyanagi’s 1960 musical score, IBM for Merce Cunningham, which used graphic notation inspired by 1960s IBM computer punch cards. SAVVY STUDIO transformed that punch-card matrix into a custom grid system applied directly to the publication design. Rather than relying on rigid modern layout columns, the new system organizes information outward from the center spine of each two-page spread. Drawing directly from concrete poetry by Fluxus movement artists like George Brecht, text blocks are placed at rhythmic coordinates—giving the catalog content the cadence of sound art while keeping the typography perfectly crisp and legible.
The physical pieces look stunningly sharp in high-contrast photos captured by photographer Clément Pascal. From bound monographs and exhibition invites for the Hirshhorn Museum to hardcover notebooks, every piece utilizes raw uncoated stock paired with deep carbon-black silkscreen printing. This cohesive identity extends to wooden shipping crates, stenciled packing tape, inventory labels, and even studio apparel. Subtle paint overspray from Pendleton’s active artworks catches the edges of the smooth paper, forming a wonderful contrast between raw artistic process and polished print craftsmanship.

Bảng lưới thẻ đục lỗ và cảm hứng nghệ thuật Fluxus
Nền tảng của cấu trúc dàn trang xuất phát từ bản ký âm năm 1960 của Toshi Ichiyanagi mang tên IBM for Merce Cunningham. Tác phẩm này sử dụng các ký hiệu đồ họa lấy cảm hứng từ thẻ đục lỗ máy tính IBM thập niên 1960. Các khối văn bản được đặt theo những tọa độ mang nhịp điệu riêng, giúp phần nội dung và thông tin catalog có giai điệu ngắt nhịp của nghệ thuật âm thanh mà vẫn giữ trọn sự rõ ràng của chữ.
Các sản phẩm thực tế được thể hiện vô cùng sắc nét qua bộ ảnh độ tương phản cao của nhiếp ảnh gia Clément Pascal. Từ các cuốn monograph đóng bìa, thiệp mời triển lãm cho Bảo tàng Hirshhorn đến những cuốn sổ tay bìa cứng đều sử dụng chất liệu giấy thô nhám (uncoated stock) kết hợp cùng kỹ thuật in lưới màu đen carbon (carbon-black silkscreen). Bộ nhận diện này còn lan tỏa đồng bộ lên thùng gỗ vận chuyển, băng dính in stencil, nhãn kiểm kê và cả trang phục làm việc tại studio. Bụi sơn xịt từ các bức tranh đang sáng tác của Pendleton bám lên mép giấy mịn, tạo nên sự đối thoại thú vị giữa quá trình làm nghệ thuật thô mộc và kỹ nghệ in ấn chỉn chu.
