After a complicated copyright battle with Universal Pictures, Disney lost ownership of Oswald, which actually prompted the creation of Mickey Mouse as a replacement. It wasn’t until 2006 that Disney finally reacquired the rights. Now, this original cartoon bunny is officially returning to the screen in a dedicated mini-series on Disney+.
This upcoming Oswald project will be a three-part series written, directed, and executive produced by Jon Favreau—the big-name director behind hits like Elf, The Jungle Book, The Lion King (live-action), and The Mandalorian.
For fans of traditional animation, this is incredibly exciting news. Ever since Disney shifted entirely to 3D technology in the early 2000s, there has been a constant longing for the return of hand-drawn art.
